Sun Protection

We’ve said it before, and we will say it again – the most important step in your skincare routine and anti-aging skincare regimen is your skin’s protection against UV radiation and UV induced aging. Here’s our friendly reminder to protect your skin this summer and all year round. We’ve answered your most frequently asked questions below.

WHO NEEDS SUNSCREEN?  EVERYONE. Sunscreen prevents skin cancer and protects against premature aging, including wrinkles and sunspots.

WHAT TYPE OF SUNSCREEN SHOULD I USE?

  • Broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection
  • SPF of 30 or higher
  • Water resistant
  • We also recommend seeking shade while outdoors, wearing sun-protective clothing, avoiding tanning beds, and using extra caution near water, snow, and sand as they reflect the sun’s rays.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL SUNSCREEN?

  • Physical (mineral) sunscreens contain titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and/or iron oxide.
  • Mineral sunscreens are recommended for people with sensitive skin or those prone to pigmentation.
  • If your skin is prone to pigmentation we recommend using a tinted mineral sunscreen, which contains iron oxide, and protects against visible and blue light.

WHAT NUMBER SPF SHOULD I USE? At least SPF 30.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I APPLY AND HOW OFTEN?

  • Apply enough sunscreen to cover all skin (even areas covered by clothing).
  • Don’t forget the tops of your feet, your neck, your ears, and the top of your head/scalp.
  • Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15-20 minutes before going outdoors.
  • Protect your lips by applying an SPF balm.
  • Regardless of SPF, sunscreen should be reapplied approximately every two hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.

HOW DO I TREAT A SUN BURN?

  • Get out of the sun as soon as possible
  • Take cool baths or showers
  • Apply moisturizer containing aloe vera while your skin is still damp
  • Consider ibuprofen to reduce swelling/discomfort
  • Drink extra water.
  • Do not pop sun blisters, to prevent an infection.
