How do you treat pigmentation with lasers?
Overexposure to the sun can lead to dark spots or hyperpigmentation, also known as sunspots, age spots, brown spots, or liver spots. The best way to avoid these types of lesions is to avoid excess sun exposure, but that may not always be possible.
Laser treatments are highly effective in treating and diminishing pigmented lesions by breaking apart the pigmented area or lesion which the exfoliates off the skin. However, for best results, a combined method is most effective, using laser treatments, chemical peels, microneedling, facials etc.
At PureSkin Dermatology, our medical director Dr. Tania Bhanji will review and assess these lesions to ensure that they are not more serious cancerous lesions, before proceeding with treatment.
What to expect during treatment
We recommend you avoid sun exposure for at least 4 weeks or sunless tanning for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to your laser treatment.
Most patients find their laser treatments very tolerable. You may feel warmth and heat during the procedure – this is normal.
At PureSkin Dermatology, we use a cooling cryogen spray with every laser pulse, making your laser treatment virtually painless.
What to expect after treatment
After your laser treatment, it is normal to feel a sensation of heat for a few minutes. You may experience mild to moderate redness for 4-6 hours after treatment.
You may use over the counter hydrocortisone cream once or twice daily to the treated area to alleviate these symptoms. The pigmented lesions will darken and have superficial crusting for a few days after treatment.
These will fall off naturally, do not pick or rub the treatment area. Avoid sun exposure to the treated area and use sunscreen regularly.
