What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)?
Our blood is mostly composed of plasma, a liquid which contains red cells, white cells, and platelets. Platelets are known to help clot the blood and contain growth factors that have healing properties. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is developed from your own blood by concentrating the number of platelets and growth factors, by spinning the blood down using a centrifuge. These concentrated platelets and growth factors (PRP) are now ready for injection into the desired site.
PRP can be used to treat fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, collagen loss, under eye circles/hollows, and much more.
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a similar but more advanced technique. PRF also uses your own blood, but instead of separating platelets and plasma, the blood is processed in a way that allows for a higher concentration of platelets, growth factors, and fibrin, which forms a gel-like matrix. This gel helps to sustain the growth factors for a longer period of time and offers more long-term benefits in healing. PRF is typically used in regenerative medicine, wound healing, and even in aesthetic procedures like hair restoration and facial rejuvenation.
What to expect during a treatment
During your procedure, one of our skin experts will take a sample of your blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge. Once the highly concentrated platelet rich plasma has separated from the other components in the sample, it is harvested and injected into the skin.
You may feel a slight pinch or pressure during the injections, but any discomfort is typically minimal.
You may have a very small amount of pinpoint bleeding where the needle was inserted. This usually subsides in a few hours.
What to expect after a treatment
After PRP treatment, the injection site may be sore for 24-48 hours. Ice can help reduce swelling, and over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol can be taken as needed.
Patients may experience some bruising at the injection site. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after the procedure to allow the area to heal properly.
PRP therapy is a safe and effective way to treat various skin issues, and most patients experience little to no downtime after the procedure.
