Mole Mapping | PureSkin Dermatology | London ON

Mole Mapping

Mole mapping is a comprehensive skin surveillance tool that uses high-resolution photography and AI software to document and monitor moles and other pigmented lesions over time. By comparing images from one visit to the next, subtle changes can be detected earlier, helping to identify concerning lesions that may require further evaluation.

At PureSkin Dermatology, we use the Canfield IntelliStudio system to capture detailed images of your skin. These images create a visual record that allows us to identify subtle changes in existing moles or detect new lesions early.

Who is a candidate for Mole Mapping?

Mole mapping may be beneficial for individuals who:

Have a large number of moles (typically more than 50)
Have atypical or unusual-looking moles
Have a personal history of skin cancer, including melanoma
Have a family history of melanoma
Have fair skin or a history of significant sun exposure or sunburns
Notice new or changing moles
Want a more comprehensive approach to skin cancer surveillance

If you are unsure whether mole mapping is right for you, a consultation can help determine if you would benefit from ongoing monitoring.

What to expect during a treatment

Your appointment will include a series of standardized, high-resolution photographs taken of your skin. These images create a detailed record of your moles and pigmented lesions, allowing for comparison over time.

We use advanced AI-assisted software to help identify and track new, changing, or evolving lesions between visits. The technology enhances our ability to monitor your skin systematically, while all images and findings are reviewed by our physicians as part of your overall assessment.

The process is non-invasive, painless, and typically takes 20-30 minutes depending on the extent of imaging required. Following your imaging session, your physician will review any lesions of concern and discuss recommendations for follow-up, biopsy, or ongoing monitoring if needed.

Please note: AI is used as a supportive tool and does not replace the expertise and clinical judgment of your physician.

What to expect after a treatment

Following your appointment, your physician will carefully review your images and skin findings. You will receive a comprehensive mole mapping portfolio that includes a summary of your assessment, any areas of concern, and personalized recommendations for next steps.

You will also receive a secure digital copy of your images. Having access to your photographs allows you to become an active participant in your skin health by performing regular self-examinations and monitoring for new or changing lesions between visits.

Based on your individual risk factors and findings, we may recommend:

Routine follow-up mole mapping and imaging
Short-term monitoring of specific lesions
Skin biopsies for suspicious lesions
Ongoing skin cancer surveillance at intervals tailored to your risk profile

Our goal is not only to detect changes early but also to provide you with the tools, information, and guidance needed to confidently monitor your skin between appointments. There is no downtime following mole mapping, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after your visit.
