What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels involve applying a solution to the skin that will remove dead skin cells, allowing fresh new skin to the surface, resulting in radiant, glowing skin. Chemical peels are safe and effective to treat sunspots, age spots, superficial lines and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, uneven skin tone and rough skin. At PureSkin Dermatology, we offer a range of chemical peels:

– AHA Peel
– BHA Peel
– Half Jessner Peel (7% lactic acid, 7% salicylic acid, 7% resorcinol)
– Jessner Peel (14% lactic acid, 14% salicylic acid, 14% resorcinol)

We highly recommend a skincare consultation with our skin experts to determine what type of chemical is right for you.

What To Expect

What to expect during treatment

First, a solvent such as chlorhexidine or alcohol is applied to the area of the skin to be treated. Next, the chemical peeling solution is applied, remaining on the skin for the time necessary to get the desired results.

Once the peel process is complete, a neutralizing agent is applied. Depending on the type of chemical peel, the treated area may be covered with a masque or other post care treatment.

What to expect after treatment

The depth of the chemical peel will dictate the amount of downtime. The skin is usually pink after treatment and will “peel” for 2-7 days and depends on intensity of treatment.

Patients can expect redness and swelling post-treatment, although usually not much discomfort. After 2-3 days, the skin goes reddish-brown, hardens, and then flakes and peels for several more days.

FAQ

Before a chemical peel protocol is chosen for you, at PureSkin Dermatology, we perform an in-depth skin assessment using our VISIA Skin Analysis system. This allows us to customize the type of chemical peel, the depth and the frequency of treatments required to achieve the desired outcome.
Depending on the depth of the chemical peel, most patient’s skin will flake from 2-7 days. For some, no flaking occurs, but that does not mean that the treatment was ineffective.
The number of treatments required will depend on the skin concern being addressed – fine lines and wrinkles, superficial vs deep pigmentation. Usually a combination treatment is preferred, combining chemical peels, with microneedling and laser photofacial treatments.
